MSP Airport – Safety and Security Center

Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport

When all phases of the project are complete, the Safety and Security Center (SSC) will replace existing airport and emergency services facilities now currently scattered across the airport campus.  The new building will provide consolidated operations for the Airport Police Department, Airside Operations, a new Airport Operations Center (the NorthStar Center); Emergency Operations Center (EOC); Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting Station Number 2, and the airport’s 911 Dispatch Center. The Phase 1 Fire Station No. 2 has finished up construction summer 2024 and construction for Phase 2 is underway.

These multiple programs will reside within a robust and secure structure housing state of the art facilities and technology. Site placement of the facility was chosen to meet airfield access needs and response times, as well as visual oversite of the airfield. Providing a durable and resilient exterior, layers of textured precast concrete cladding wrap the building.  Location of ribbon windows and large glass expanses were carefully placed to provide line-of-sight to the airfield and campus for key personnel, as well as to bring daylight deep into the building’s interior spaces.  The high-performance structure has been detailed with improved insulation, energy efficient mechanical systems, low impact materials and finishes, and is designed & constructed to be ready for solar panels.  The project is designed to meet LEED Silver.
