IDS Center – Rooftop Improvements

Minneapolis, MN

Downtown Icon

Miller Dunwiddie’s extensive design and preservation experience has led to many opportunities to restore and reinforce buildings that we admire. One highlight is the iconic IDS Center in downtown Minneapolis. The Philip Johnson skyscraper has defined the Minneapolis skyline since 1972. However, the progressive design of this glass jewel box preceded the availability of corresponding materials that could endure the extremes of Minnesota’s climate. Leaks were an issue. Miller Dunwiddie was asked to update the roof system with durable new materials to secure the tower against moisture ingress.

The building’s owner wanted a very durable, high-performance system that would provide long-term reliability. Our diverse portfolio gives us a broad set of reference points on materials and building systems, which helped us create an informed strategy to secure the IDS Center. Our team conducted a complete assessment of the building’s roof and water management systems. We introduced a unique roof system that combines polyurethane and PVC technologies. It is effective and discreet. Our solution safeguards Johnson’s design and keeps the Minneapolis landmark high and dry.
